A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

No tsunami warning was issued. There were no reports of problems at nuclear plants in the area, or of power outages or bullet trains operating in northern Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake, which occurred at 6:55 p.m. (0955 GMT), had a depth of 140 km and hit the southwestern part of Hokkaido.

The agency said the quake shook most parts of the island, including the cities of Chitose and Atsuma.

Parts of northern Honshu, the country’s largest island where Tokyo is located, were also affected, although the country’s capital was not affected.

In March 2011, the country was hit by a massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake off the northeast of the country. The earthquake triggered a tsunami that left about 18,500 dead or missing. It also caused a major accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

In March 2022, a powerful earthquake struck northeastern Japan, shaking buildings about 275 kilometers (171 miles) away in Tokyo and leaving hundreds of thousands without power, including the capital. Three people were killed and more than 100 injured.

In May 2023, a strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake killed at least one person, destroyed buildings, and injured more than 20 people.
