NEW DELHI: An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, as a result of which Delhi and many parts of northern India were hit by tremors. According to officials, the quake occurred at 1.33 pm, and its source was near the remote village of Gandoh Bhalisa. in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. “The tremors may have been felt in Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Punjab and all nearby areas. The aftershock could be of lesser magnitude than the main shock,” said Director of the National Center for Seismology Dr. O. P. Mishra.

People felt severe earthquake in Srinagar

The quake occurred 30 kilometers southeast of Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre. The earthquake had a depth of 60 kilometers (37.28 miles) and the epicenter was 99 kilometers north of Patankot. Responding to Tuesday’s quake, a resident of Srinagar said: ” The earthquake scared the school children. People rushed in the shops. It was scary. This was more severe than the tremors last week…”
