A woman who works at the local B&Q store has told of her horror when she saw a truck driver cut down two pedestrians as he appeared to be trying to escape from a police car behind him, Patrick Sawyer reports.

Lynn Haggett told Channel 4 News: “It was 5:30 and I saw a white van pull up next to me. It was white. There was a police car behind it that slowly appeared, there were no flashing lights.

The man in the driver’s seat looked in his mirror and saw the police car behind. Then the white van pulled up on the street corner and walked over to two people.”

She added: “The woman ended up on the sidewalk and then backed up the truck and sped down Parliament Street followed by police cars.”

Ms. Haggett said the truck drove “straight into” pedestrians.

“He didn’t even bother to turn around, he just went right back at her,” she claimed, adding: “The man got to his feet, with a head injury. Amazingly, he got up and waited for the ambulance.”

The woman was sitting on the sidewalk. I was there for 15 minutes and there was no ambulance. The policeman started giving first aid.”

Mrs. Haggett described the truck driver as having braids and a beard and wearing a hat. She said, “You just don’t want to see that kind of thing,”

Describing what she witnessed near the Nottingham Theater Royal, Mrs Haggett added: “The woman went on the pavement, the man went up in the air, and there was such an explosion, I wish I’d never seen it, it really shook me. I went, maybe I shouldn’t have gone but I I wanted to know if I could help.”
