An earthquake of medium intensity has hit Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday afternoon. While there have been no reports of loss of life or property so far, the earthquake was felt as far as Delhi-NCR.
According to the National Center of Seismology (NCS), a 5.4-magnitude earthquake occurred at UT at 1:33 p.m. The epicenter was located in Doda district of Jammu Division, at a depth of about 30 kilometers.
“Its coordinates are 33.12 degrees north latitude and 75.98 degrees east longitude,” officials said.
“The tremors may have been felt in Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Punjab and all nearby areas. The aftershock could be of lesser magnitude than the main shock,” National Center for Seismology director Dr. OP Mishra told The Times of India.
Kashmir is located in a highly sensitive seismic region where earthquakes have wreaked havoc in the past. On October 8, 2005, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck Jammu, killing more than 80,000 people on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC).
