Real Madrid will wait for PSG’s response to Kylian Mbappe’s refusal to sign a new deal before acting

Real Madrid has a plan, and the only obstacle to its success is the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Kylian Mbappe did his job by writing to inform PSG that he will not be renewing his contract.

Now the French champions have a choice: they can sell him for a fee this summer or let him leave for free in 2024.

The story that broke on Monday night concluded that they are staunchly against losing him to nothing. But this may just be wishful thinking on the part of Mbappe whose people have, it seems, given the story to L’Equipe.

Everything we’ve seen from QSI since he took over at PSG in 2012 suggests they won’t lose a minute of sleep if Mbappe is released for free in 2024 – money is no object, it never was.

Kylian Mbappe revealed that he will not stay in Paris Saint-Germain until after the end of his contract in 2024, and the Emir of Qatar has Mbappe’s future in his hands, as Paris Saint-Germain faces a sale or loses it for free. Leave

Ever since Barcelona tried to sign Marquinhos from them in 2016 they were told they had no chance of the same record being repeated. It happened to Barcelona again with Marco Verratti and later when they tried to re-sign Neymar. PSG does not sell its best players.

With Messi gone and Neymar gone, only Mbappe is left. He’s the best player in the world, the home boy, and front and center of all their promotions for next season. If they lose it, the treasury is bare.

Paris Saint-Germain’s unofficial director of football Louis Campos may tell club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi that keeping an unhappy Mbappe for another season will only lead to another toxic campaign with unhappy supporters and nothing uniting the team. Al-Khelaifi might even agree. But if he says that to the emir in Qatar and is told that Mbappe is not leaving this summer under any circumstances, Madrid need to go back to finding another way to deal with the sudden departure of Karim Benzema.

Benzema was supposed to stay on for the last year of his contract. And in 2024, Real Madrid was supposed to sign Mbappe on a free transfer. He would not have signed a one-year extension to his current deal in Paris.

Benzema’s perfectly timed decision smashed that plan and sent Madrid stumbling into an impromptu chase for Harry Kane and Kai Havertz. Neither deal really convinces them. Mbappe is the person they want and now they will have to wait and see how PSG’s owners react to the challenge for their star player.

Madrid will not make the first move. They are still stung by losing him twice in the last two years. But if Mbappe is given a magic number by PSG – the amount they would accept to lose – he would take that to Florentino Perez and if a fee is a possibility for Real Madrid, considering PSG is unlikely to be open to him. They are paid in instalments, they get the player they thought they would have to wait another year.

If the exact figure is €200m (£171m), serious consideration will be given to all that Madrid has pledged not to give PSG a single euro to its player. Signing Kane would now cost more than €100m (£86m) and Mbappe next summer for free would mean paying a staggering signing fee, so paying €200m (£171m) now wouldn’t necessarily be seen as a bad deed.

If he falls, he will become a problem for the beautiful Carlo Ancelotti. His preferred starting position is the left front three where Vinicius wants to play. Carletto is unlikely to lose much sleep over how to make it work. Since coaches and players never tire of repeating good players, they can always play together.

Real Madrid had been stung by Kylian Mbappe and would await Paris Saint-Germain’s response, and Karim Benzema’s sudden move to Saudi Arabia created an unexpected problem for Real Madrid.

If the ingenious Ancelotti can persuade Mbappe to become a central striker who will take Karim Benzema’s place in the team, then the team’s plastic surgery will be minimal.

If he can’t, in a 4-2-3-1, Real Madrid can field Rodrigo Jes up front and Fede Valverde, Mbappe and Vinicius right to left in front of Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga.

Ancelotti, a former PSG boss himself, will know not to worry too much about the changes just yet. The next step in this wise should take place in Paris, or more precisely, in Qatar.
