When actors go, you don’t get more respect than Olivia Colman and Samuel L. Jackson.
Both have won Academy Awards in the past few years — Colman won Best Actress for The Favorite in 2019, and Jackson received an Honorary Academy Award last year.
Now the two are paired up in Marvel’s new series Secret Invasion – and they seem to be as fans of each other as they are moviegoers.

“I think I was probably very grateful to you when I first met you,” Coleman told Jackson while speaking to Sky News’ Backstage podcast.
“Whoa, no, you haven’t,” Jackson laughs. “We just looked at each other, and started laughing — we knew how much fun it was going to be.
“When you see someone that you respect and all of a sudden you’re in that space with them, you kind of know, well, that’s going to be super, you know right away if it’s going to be a chore or if it’s going to be fun.”
The series also stars the likes of Emilia Clarke, Don Cheadle, and Martin Freeman – of whom, it turns out, Jackson is a huge fan.
“I didn’t get to work with him, but I went to work that day just to watch him work because I wanted to see him,” Jackson says. “I had to go meet him. I was like, ‘I’m not doing anything with you, but I wanted to meet you so bad.'”

While Jackson has been playing Nick Fury in the Marvel franchise since he first appeared in a post-credits scene in 2008’s Iron Man, Colman is a newcomer. However, she does admit that she’s been eager to join the MCU, for some time.
“After every Marvel release, I call my agent and say I want to be at Marvel. I don’t know if they had a say in it, but it eventually did. So, yeah, I’m very happy.”
Secret Invasion is set in the current MCU where a group of mutants are trying to take over Earth. Coleman plays MI6 agent Sonia Falsworth, an old ally of Fury’s – though it’s not clear which side she’s really on.
Jackson asks her if her character is a villain or a heroine.
“I’m an evil heroine, I guess,” she says. “Well, I don’t quite remember what happened and I only watched the first two episodes, so maybe I’m not.”
But Jackson’s memory seems clearer.
“You’re quite a supervillain and gangster. Let’s say — you’re totally gangster and you’re having fun with that.”

The show is something of a political thriller and definitely seems more mature than some of Marvel’s previous series, with admittedly less action.

Jackson says the goal was to do something different.
“That’s a decent intrigue and it seems like a Disney+ franchise, and the things that come out there like Loki and Wandavision — they all have their own distinct personalities. And that follows in that canon I think is more interesting than anything else that’s been.”
Secret Invasion will premiere on Disney+ on June 21st
