3.1 magnitude earthquake recorded in Appin, New South Wales

A 3.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded in southwestern Sydney.

Geoscience Australia recorded that the quake occurred near Abyan, south of Campbelltown, around 2pm on Sunday.

The quake was at a depth of 3 km and was felt by at least 14 people across the region, according to Australian Geosciences.

Residents of Douglas Park, near Appin, used social media to share how they felt the earthquakes.

One of the residents said, “Our whole house shook and there was a big bang like an explosion.”

Another resident said that “the shivering lasted much longer than all the others we had felt before”.

Woolundelli Mayor Matt Gold said he did not personally feel the tremors, but residents reported various incidents to him in the moments after the quake.

“It seemed that in Meangle and Douglas Park in particular it was definitely strong enough, things shook up a bit and the pictures came off the wall,” Gould said.

“It’s really good that there doesn’t seem to be any harm.”

He said that while the earthquake was “fresh” and “exciting” on Sunday, it was not the first time it had hit the region in recent years.

“We don’t feel them often but sometimes,” Gould said.

“We had one in Appin last year but this will be the strongest in recent history.

“We’ll probably get one every two years.

Store owners told Appin NewsCorp Australia there was not a lot of damage to the city.

“We didn’t see any damage,” said one local business owner, noting that they “didn’t feel” a single chill.

Another added: “We heard about it first.”

“We didn’t feel anything.”
