The lost submarine, called the Titan, usually carries a pilot, three paying guests, and what OceanGate calls “expert content.”
In a tweet Monday, CBS Sunday Morning correspondent David Pogue wrote: “You may recall that the @OceanGateExped sub to the Titanic got lost for a few hours last summer, too, when I was on board.”
In his broadcast since then, he said: “There is no GPS underwater, so the surface ship is supposed to direct the submarine to the wreck by sending text messages.
“But on that dive connection somehow broke down, and the submarine never found the wreck.”
The family is ‘broken’
Kathleen Cosnett, Mr Harding’s cousin, told The Telegraph she was “devastated” and “distraught” to learn he was on the missing submarine.
She described him as “bold” and “curious… adventurous”. He has been sending his “thoughts and prayers,” Brian Szasz, his stepson, said.
OceanGate said in a statement that its focus is on those on board and their families.
“We are deeply grateful for the extensive assistance we have received from many government agencies and deep sea companies in our efforts to reconnect with the submarine,” she said.
There is still time to facilitate the rescue mission, and there is equipment on board to survive the event. We all hope and pray that He returns safe and sound.”
Mr Harding wrote on social media that the research vessel departed St. John’s, in Newfoundland, Canada, on Friday and the team planned to begin the dive at 4am local time on Sunday with the “weather window” open.
The father-of-two, who lives in the UAE, said he was “proud” to join OceanGate as a “mission specialist,” adding that the group includes “two legendary explorers.”
