A US Navy official said the US Navy detected sounds “consistent with an implosion” shortly after communication with OceanGate’s submarine Titan was lost.
Five people were on board when they went missing while diving into the wreck of the Titanic on Sunday.
The submarine was confirmed missing Thursday after a massive search mission.
The official told CBS News that their information about the “acoustic anomaly” was used by the US Coast Guard to narrow down the search area.
According to CNN, it was considered “not final” and so the search and rescue mission continued.
Earlier Thursday, Major General Mauger of the Coast Guard confirmed that all five people aboard Titan had died after what was likely a “catastrophic implosion,” based on the wreckage patterns detected.
However, he said that no sounds were observed during the research mission consistent with this.
“We had sonar buoys in the water almost constantly and we didn’t see any catastrophic events while the sonar buoys were in the water.”
And on Wednesday, the US Coast Guard confirmed that a Canadian B-3 had detected “underwater noises” in a search area for the missing ship.
This brought new hope that a surviving Titan crew could be found and caused the Coast Guard to relocate operations.
According to CBS, this noise is now believed to be coming from other ships in the area.
Paul Hankin, an undersea expert, said the first indication that the submarine may have exploded from the inside came after a large debris field was found on Thursday.
“We basically found five different large pieces of debris that told us they were the remains of Titan,” he said.
Efforts are continuing to map the wreckage field and search the sea floor around the Titanic.
Contact was lost with the ship about 1 hour 45 minutes into her dive about a week earlier. The wreck of the Titanic is located 435 miles (700 kilometers) south of St. John’s, Newfoundland.
On board was British billionaire businessman Hamish Harding, who wrote on social media before the dive that he was running because the “weather window” was open,
He said that due to “Newfoundland’s worst winter in 40 years, the expedition will likely be the first and only manned expedition to the Titanic in 2023”.
British father and son Shehzadeh and Suleiman Daoud were also part of the crew. They were one of the richest families in Pakistan.
Stockton Rush, CEO of OceanGate, also died aboard the Titan, along with former French Navy diver Paul-Henri Nargolet.
