TEMPO.CO, JAKARTA – A 5.0-magnitude earthquake jolted north of Sumatra, according to a recent report by Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) on Monday, June 26, at 17:12 West Indonesia Time (WIB).

The earthquake originated on land at a depth of 81 kilometers, and its epicenter was 34 kilometers southwest of the Hombang Hsundutan district, said Daryono, Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Department at BMKG, in a press release.

It was observed that the main cause of the earthquake came from the rock deformation activity of the Indo-Australian plate under the island of Sumatra.

The agency called for calm and warned the public to be vigilant about information spreading online. He said the quake did not trigger an early tsunami warning, and minutes after the initial quake, it showed no signs of aftershocks.
