James Maddison completes Tottenham medical ahead of his move from Leicester

James Maddison completed his medical at Tottenham before moving from Leicester City in a deal worth over £40m.

The Athletic reported on Wednesday that Tottenham and Leicester City had agreed to pay a fee for the England international, who had one year to run for his contract with the recently relegated club.

Leicester were initially to carry around £60m ($76.4m), but Spurs will pay around £40m up front plus add-ons.

Maddison has also attracted interest from Newcastle United, who turned down two offers last summer, but the 26-year-old has now joined Aji Postecoglou’s new team at Tottenham.

Maddison, who arrived from Norwich City in 2018, made 32 appearances for Leicester in all competitions in 2022-23, scoring 10 goals and recording 9 assists.

But he was unable to prevent the former Premier League winners from suffering their first relegation since being relegated to the top flight in 2008.

Leicester face an important summer as they look to re-establish their squad with new boss Enzo Maresca at the helm.

Youri Tielemans has already joined Aston Villa, while the club has also confirmed that Caglar Soyonko, Ayoze Perez, Daniel Amarte, Nambales Mendy and Ryan Bertrand will all leave this summer.

The Athletic reports that Harvey Barnes is expected to be in demand while others – such as Timothy Castagne, Dennis Bright, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi – could also be sold with a cut in the wage bill.

Tottenham is seeking to make its own comprehensive reforms under Postecoglou’s leadership, after a drop to eighth place that made him miss out on European football.

They have already completed the signing of Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario for a fee of around €20m (£17.2m, $21.9m).

But Harry Kane’s future is back in the spotlight after Bayern Munich made an offer of €70m plus add-ons, which is set to be rejected.

Maddison will immediately bring two ingredients that Spurs have been missing for several years: Dele Alli’s bravado and Christian Eriksen’s creativity.

Madison may bring a lot besides, but those two qualities are part of what makes this potential signing so exciting.

And let’s face it, everyone associated with Tottenham needs a little refresher after Athletic revealed on Tuesday that Bayern Munich had made a €70m (£60.2m; $76.7m) bid for Harry Kane.

Leaving aside the uncertainty about Kane for the moment, when was the last time a Tottenham signing was this exciting?

Maddison feels exactly what this Spurs team needs and his arrival will be a rarer sign from a Spurs new signing who so unites the fan base. There will be few opponents, but it’s hard to complain too much about signing a player at his peak who has proven to be one of the best in his position in the Premier League.
