Madonna postponed her world tour after being admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital with a serious bacterial infection.

According to her manager, the international pop star’s injury was “serious” and led to her “staying for several days in the intensive care unit”. He added that a full recovery is expected.

Guy Oseary said in a statement that Madonna’s health is improving, but she remains under medical care.

Madonna, 64, was expected to start next month.

The pop icon is aiming to celebrate the 40th anniversary of her hit single, Holiday, by embarking on her first-ever headlining tour.

Dubbed the Celebration Tour, this will be the singer’s return to arenas and stadiums following her Madame X stage demos in 2019 and 2020.

Some of these shows were canceled due to the star’s knee and hip injuries.

Madonna’s tour was scheduled to start in Vancouver, Canada, on July 15 and end on December 6 in London.

But the singer-songwriter’s manager said Madonna caught a “serious bacterial infection” on Saturday, June 24 and would need to stop all commitments as a result.

She was scheduled to start the UK and Europe leg of her tour on 14 October, scheduled to start and end at the O2 Arena in London.

When announcing the tour in January, she told fans: “I’m excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes of giving my fans the show they’ve been waiting for.”

Madonna’s greatest hits span several decades – including Into The Groove (1985), Like A Prayer (1989), Vogue (1990), and Hung Up (2005) to name a few.

It’s possible that Madonna – who is quite private about health matters – was in the last stages of her rehearsal regime in preparation for the tour.

In 2009, she was awarded a Guinness World Record for the highest-grossing concert tour by a female artist after completing her Sticky & Sweet Tour.

Forbes lists her as the 45th richest self-made woman in the US with an estimated fortune of $580m (£460m) and says she has earned an estimated $1.2bn from tours.

She has six children. Last week, she sent to her 18.9 million Instagram followers to congratulate her 10-year-old twin daughters for completing primary school.

Madonna Louise Ciccone grew up in Detroit, Michigan. In 1978, she moved to New York to pursue a career in dance and music.

Earlier this year, her older brother, Anthony Ciccone, passed away at the age of 66 after battling alcoholism and homelessness.
