Houses were reportedly “shaking” and windows and doors “shaking” on Wednesday night (28 June) when an earthquake struck North Staffordshire.
The British Geological Survey issued a seismic alert just before midnight yesterday saying the tremor occurred at around 8.21pm with a magnitude of 3.3mm and lasted about 14.1 seconds.
The survey said the quake was mostly felt by residents in the village of Tian, but many people reported feeling the quake from across Stoke-on-Trent and in towns such as Cheadle and Stafford.
People reported feeling a “rumbling before a loud bang” around 9.20pm, while others said there was a “clattering” of windows and doors.
The survey wrote on Twitter: “BGS has received several reports from residents across the region, particularly from within about 20km of the epicenter.
Reports described “initial clatter and then a bang”, “it felt like a shunt, as if something had hit something” and “all the windows and doors rattled”.
The survey alert reads:
Seismic Alert: TEAN, STAFFORDSHIRE Jun 28, 2023 20:21 UTC 3.3 mil. Origin time: 20:21 14.1 seconds UTC. Long/Long: 52.922°N / 1.950°W. GRID REF: 403.4 km E / 336.1 km N. Depth: 7.3 km. MAGNITUDE: 3.3 ml. Location: Taine, Staffordshire. Density: 3 EMS

Many people have taken to social media to spread information about the earthquake.
One person writes: “It definitely felt like an AutoXeter – didn’t realize it was an earthquake thought the crash was something of a neighbor’s construction work.”
Councilor Abe Brown, a member of the Mere Park ward of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, also posted about the incident.
She wrote: “I think we just had a little earthquake…”
Another said: ‘I felt the rumbles here in Stafford. I thought I was fantasizing about it at first but the wife felt it too.
“Yeah here in Tean’s house the whole thing shook.”
Another confirmed that they felt the earthquake: “In Tian, too, they felt it shaking the house.”
An earthquake is what happens when two blocks of earth suddenly slide across each other.
The surface from which you slide is called a fault or fault plane.
