The Russian general who may have known about Wagner’s rebellion has disappeared

Michael McFaul, the former US ambassador to Russia, told The New York Times, “There were a lot of strange things that happened that, in my opinion, point to collusion that we haven’t discovered yet.”

And he added: “Think how easy it is to take Rostov.” “There are armed guards everywhere in Russia, and all of a sudden, there’s no one around to do anything?”

It comes as Vladimir Putin begins reforming his security apparatus in the wake of the failed coup, surrounding himself with supporters to reassert his control.

A source close to Prigozhin told the Financial Times that the security services “began to shake the sympathizers and those who had broken their oath”.

Viktor Zolotov, an ally of the Russian president and former bodyguard to the president, was rewarded on Tuesday with a promotion to the National Guard, which Putin said would play a bigger role in the Ukraine war.

U.S. officials are unsure whether General Sorovikin took any steps to support the uprising, which is understood to determine if other generals took a similar stance.

Some do not believe that Mr. Prigozhin would have launched the revolt had he not thought he had some support.

Commenting on allegations that General Surovikin knew about the coup, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he expected “a lot of speculation about these events”, adding: “I think this is an example of this.”
