Hope Hostel is lined up to host immigrants from the United Kingdom
Earlier this week, the Home Office published an assessment of the economic impact of the government’s illegal immigration bill – including the Rwanda plan.
It estimated that sending a migrant to a “safe country” such as Rwanda could cost £63,000 more than keeping them in the UK.
The amount is the difference between the total cost of resettling an individual – estimated at £169,000 – and the £106,000 that would be spent on housing support if the migrant remained in the UK.
The total £169,000 includes a payment to that country of about £105,000 per person, plus £22,000 for excursions and escorts per person.
But the government argues the policy will also have a deterrent effect – leading to savings, including a reduction in asylum seekers’ hotel bills.
However, the Home Office said it was “uncertain” what level of deterrence would affect the policy because it was “new and untested”.
