Elon Musk announces daily restrictions on Twitter as thousands report problems when seeing tweets

After a slew of reports from users saying they can’t see new tweets and being greeted with a “rate limit exceeded” error message, Elon Musk has announced new daily restrictions on Twitter which includes only allowing unverified users to read 600 posts. Per day.

Musk took to Twitter to share the news, saying that these “temporary limits” are meant to “address extreme levels of data masking and system manipulation.” In addition to limiting unverified accounts to “600 posts/day”, new unverified accounts will only be able to read 300 posts per day.

If you have a verified Twitter Blue account, you will be able to read 6,000 posts per day.

Musk didn’t provide further explanation or timeline, but this change has already caused thousands of people to report outages because they are unable to see new tweets and get the previously mentioned “rate limit exceeded” error message.

According to DownDetector.com, there have been more than 1,000 reports of Twitter outages since 4AM PT / 7AM ET this morning, July 1, and the number went on to top 1,000, peaking at 7,483 at 8:14AM EST. Pacific/11:14 a.m. ET.

My Twitter account is no longer verified and I don’t participate in Twitter Blue, and I can hardly use Twitter on my iPhone without getting the error message which you can see below. It seems to work a little better on desktop at the moment, but that could change at any moment.

This is just another chapter in the Elon Musk Twitter buyout saga, which all began when he offered to buy Twitter for $44 billion in April 2022. The move also comes on the heels of Twitter’s new decision to require users to log in even to view tweets.
