Prisoners serving prison sentences in Manchester, Britain, have launched a charity campaign to support earthquake survivors in southeastern Turkey.

Donations collected by the prisoners at Doveget Prison for the earthquake victims were handed over to the Turkish Consulate General in Manchester.

Consul General Seyfi Anwar Sayen told Anadolu Agency that prison officials had informed the consulate of their desire to launch the campaign.

“We thanked them and accepted the offer,” said Sayne, stressing that the prisoners’ donation of their allowance “has a special value.”

“We had the opportunity to thank the prisoners and administrators who organized the campaign, and we received the check,” he said during his visit to the prison after collecting donations.

Sayen said the check had already been deposited into the Turkish Disaster Management Agency’s account.

“This assistance is a good example of the solidarity shown by the people and institutions of the two countries in difficult times,” he added.

On February 6, earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 struck several Turkish provinces and northwest Syria, claiming more than 50,000 lives.

About 14 million people in Turkey were affected by the earthquakes in addition to many other earthquakes in northern Syria.
