JAKARTA (Reuters) – An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck the Indonesian province of Papua on Monday, the National Geophysics Agency said, adding that there was no possibility of a tsunami.
The epicenter was at a depth of 33 km on land.
The earthquake was strongly felt by residents in Jayapura, the capital of Papua, said local police spokesman Ignatius Bene Ade Prabowo, adding that there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Indonesia is located on both sides of the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is a very seismically active area, where different plates meet on the earth’s crust and generate a large number of earthquakes and volcanic activity.
