Mark Cavendish: British cycling legend’s heartbreak as crash ends Tour de France

[ad_1]

Mark Cavendish’s hopes of a record-breaking 35th stage victory in the Tour de France ended after he crashed out on stage eight.

Cavendish (Astana Kazakhstan), who will retire at the end of the season, hit the tarmac with 61 kilometers remaining, clutching his right shoulder. He was immediately treated by medical staff, who helped him off the road and into an ambulance.

He returns to the Tour in 2023 and is tied with Belgian great Eddy Merckx on 34 stage wins, even if he insists the hype around his pursuit of the outright record was “irrelevant”.

The 38-year-old was denied a fairytale win on Friday when a mechanical problem caused Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) to eventually fix it to stage 7.

After a remarkable 17-year career in the professional peloton, Cavendish is widely considered the greatest sprinter of all time.

He boasts points classification wins at all three Grand Tours and counts victories at Milan-San Remo (2009) and the Road World Championships (2011) to his comfort.
