Kingdom Tears wasn’t copied from Elden Ring because no one on Team Zelda had time to play it, despite hearing of FromSoftware’s epic adventure.
In an interview with Dutch website NTL Nieuws, Eiji Aonuma and Hidemaro Fujibayashi – The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom of the Kingdom respectively – shared more about the game’s concept.

When asked if the team drew any inspiration from Elden Ring, a game influenced in part by Tears of the ancestor Kingdom Breath of the Wild, Fujibayashi said the following:
“Sorry, but we didn’t really get a chance to play the game. We were too busy developing Tears of the Kingdom, which resulted in us not being able to play games. But we’ve heard about it.”
The director went on to say that even if there was time to play through the Elden Ring, or any other game for that matter, the team would “not reuse ideas from them” (as Nintendo Everything translates it).
“When we make a game, we come up with a general concept to come up with new ideas based on that,” he said.
Onuma added that he was “very proud” of trying to put ideas from other games into his making.
“Of course there are situations where you make something similar to an existing game, but I would never try to put other people’s ideas into my game… I’m always looking for original ideas.”
He then talks about the 3D jumping system in A Link Between Worlds, which made it sound as if Link is “coming straight at you”.
When I showed this to the former Nintendo president [Satoru] Iwata, he said he “didn’t know this was possible,” Onuma recalls. I was so happy to hear that, because that’s the essence of game development for me: discovering things no one else has thought of. ”
The Elden Ring was Eurogamer’s game of the year in 2022.
Upon its release in May, Tears of the Kingdom sold over 10 million units worldwide in just three days, making it the fastest selling Zelda release to date.
Elden Ring, meanwhile, has seen its sales pass 20 million since its launch in February last year.
