Not far behind is Chris Mason, who was appointed political editor last year. In 2017, he revealed that his salary as a political reporter was £60,000. Now he earns £225k – £229,999.
His predecessor, Laura Kuensberg, was earning £260,000 – £264,999 before he left. In her new role as Sunday host with Laura Kuenssberg, a job that requires her to be on air only once a week rather than appearing nightly on the news, she has seen her salary rise to £305,000 – £309,999.
Other new entries include Johnny Damon, Royal Correspondent (£195,999 – £199,999), BBC Breakfast presenters John Kay (£185,000 – £189,999) and Sally Nugent (£180,000 – £184,999).
There are now four women in the top 10: Paul, Fiona Bruce, Lauren Laverne, and Sophie Raworth.
Bruce’s real salary is well above £395,000 – £399,999 as it accounts for her work as host of Question Time, as well as 25 days of the show on BBC One, but does not include the show Antiques as these fees were not paid out of licensing expenses.
Anyone being paid via BBC studios, such as Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly for Strictly Come Dancing, is not publicly paid because it is considered a commercial secret.
The annual report also revealed that the number of households with a TV license has decreased by 500,000, from 24.9 million last year to 24.4 million. The evasion rate is now 10.31 percent, up from 9.38 percent.
The BBC blamed this on the cost of living crisis and a long-term shift in viewing habits towards competing streaming services.
