Laupāhoehoe, Hawaii, 69.6 miles SSW Hilo, Hawaii, 83.4 miles SSW Hawaiian Paradise Park, Hawaii, 91.4 miles S Kihei, Hawaii, 106.9 miles W Honolulu, Hawaii, 199.3 miles W ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ADARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency reports that the quake was recorded at a depth of about 16 miles and is not expected to generate tsunamis.

Scientists at the USGS’ Hawaiian Volcano Observatory report that the quake had no discernible effect on the Mauna Loa or Klauea volcanoes. “Deep earthquakes north of Hawaii Island are usually the result of bending of the oceanic crust and underlying fragile mantle due to the weight of the islands. This earthquake fits the pattern of past earthquakes related to bending of the oceanic lithosphere,” according to HVO.
