Jordan Henderson was not in the squad for Liverpool’s opening pre-season game – Liverpool FC

In important but perhaps somewhat unsurprising news, Jordan Henderson will play no part in Liverpool’s opening pre-season match against Karlsruher.

The Reds will start preparations for the 2023/24 season with their first friendly in Germany on Wednesday night, but that will be played without the captain’s help.

Henderson’s story has been huge in recent days after agreeing terms for a move to the Middle East to join Steven Gerrard’s “The Accord”.

The Saudi Professional League team has yet to reach an agreement with Liverpool over a transfer fee, with uncertainty arising over its ability to raise a suitable amount.

Paul Joyce of The Times confirmed just hours before the Reds’ pre-season against the German side was due to start that Henderson would miss the action, fueling speculation that the 33-year-old could be on his way out from the club.

Henderson’s midfield partner Fabinho also appears set for a move to the ongoing league, with a £40m move to Etihad confirmed in the coming days.

The captain’s absence could indicate that negotiations between the two clubs are still ongoing or simply that Jurgen Klopp has chosen to keep Henderson out of the spotlight for the time being.

It’s a consistently touching story with the potential for many twists and turns, but for now fans will have to wait and see if the captain stays at the club beyond the summer.

Wednesday’s friendly will be followed by a meeting with Greuther Furth on Monday, at which point everyone associated with the club will hope to get more clarity on the situation.

Henderson still has two years remaining on his current contract and Liverpool are under no obligation to sell despite astronomical wages being widely reported as being on offer.
