Two earthquakes in south Texas hit a small town overnight

Pleasanton residents may have experienced some intriguing shaking on Tuesday night, July 18th. The USGS reported two small earthquakes 11 miles outside of town.

Pleasanton, located about 40 miles south of San Antonio, was hit by a 3.9-magnitude earthquake around 11:22 p.m., said to be about 4.2 kilometers below surface level. It was followed by a second earthquake of magnitude 3.2 shortly after midnight. The USGS reported that Pleasanton was also hit by another 2.1-magnitude earthquake sometime on Monday, July 17.

Some Pleasanton residents may have received earthquake alerts on their phones, but so far no damage has been reported, according to KSAT 12 news report. Earthquake damage is usually associated with magnitude 4 or 5 quakes, the USGS answered in Most frequently asked questions.

While earthquakes are usually reported along the West Coast in states like California, there have been earthquakes on the East Coast, such as the 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Virginia in August 2011. Earthquakes are also known to strike places in Texas on rare occasions.

Earlier this year, the Lone Star State was hit by a 4.3-magnitude earthquake in Snyder, affecting Texas in Austin and North Texas who reportedly felt the tremors. Another earthquake struck 380 miles northwest of San Antonio on February 13. The earthquake registered a magnitude of 3.0, and canceled classes in San Antonio. A precursor to those events occurred in November 2022, when downtown San Antonio was rocked by a 5.3-magnitude earthquake that erupted from West Texas.
