On Wednesday, there was pandemonium near Berry Street in Johannesburg as motorists and pedestrians tried to make sense of the scale of the damage cited after a loud explosion.

Shocking footage has emerged of what can only be described as an earthquake near Bree Street in Johannesburg. Unconfirmed reports also claim that it was an explosion related to a gas pipeline. #JHBCBD #earthquake #johannesburg pic.twitter.com/EK3sWf8dUu

Initial reports from bystanders pointed to the earthquake as the cause. After careful assessment of the area, it appears that some areas around the affected Bree Street area were not affected.

Minimal no damage has been reported.

This begs the first question we all have, if it wasn’t an earthquake, – we don’t pretend it wasn’t – then what was?

More reports suspect a gas leak.

Panic spreads throughout the city of Johannesburg as many onlookers struggle to understand what really happened on Bre Street.

There was no sign of injuries, with a stronger response from the police and emergency services expected.

The gas leak has not been confirmed as investigations continue to bring together the missing parts necessary in an accident that would otherwise have destabilized a major taxi route in Johannesburg.

Massive underground explosion in Johannesburg, South Africa. The damage occurred along one street, damaging a highway and surrounding infrastructure. A gas explosion and earthquake have been ruled out at this point, while others have pointed to illegal mining. https://t.co/VVIp1PJGiV
