A new Global Positioning System (GPS) study shows promise for the two-hour earthquake prediction signal

Scientists may have taken an important step toward predicting earthquakes, according to a recent study published in Science on July 20.

By analyzing GPS time-series data from nearly 100 major earthquakes worldwide, they revealed evidence of a possible precursor phase that occurs two hours before a seismic rupture occurs.

2 hours warning before earthquakes

“If it is confirmed that earthquake intensification often involves a preliminary phase of hours, and the means can be developed to measure it reliably, a precursor warning can be issued,” Roland Borgmann said in a press release.

The ability to predict earthquakes has always been a challenge. Short-term earthquake forecasting aims to issue warnings from minutes to months in advance of an earthquake – these warnings are based on specific and observable geophysical precursor signals.
