Live News: Prigozhin should expect “more retaliation” for the failed insurgency, says the CIA chief

CIA Director Bill Burns said on Thursday that Wagner paramilitary group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin was unlikely to escape “further retaliation” from Russian President Vladimir Putin for his failed insurgence.

Burns said at the Aspen Security Forum that Putin and Prigozhin, who the US intelligence chief has confirmed are in Belarus, are engaging in an “intricate dance”. “Putin is someone who believes that revenge is best served cold,” he added.

Prigozhin’s failed rebellion, Burns said, has weakened Putin’s standing with ordinary Russians and the elite. “For a lot of Russians who were watching this, accustomed to the image of Putin as the arbiter of the regime, the question was, does the emperor have no clothes, or at least, why does he take so long to get dressed?”
