Daniel Levy has asked to sell Harry Kane this summer unless a new contract is signed with Tottenham

But for now at least, the club are pursuing Atalanta striker Rasmus Hoeglund and have other targets on their list amid reservations about Tottenham’s willingness to sell to them and the overall cost of the deal.

If forced to sell Kane – who turns 30 on Friday – Levy would very much prefer to do so for an overseas club rather than a Premier League rival, strengthening Bayern Munich’s position.

However, the prospect of allowing Kane – as close to securing goals as any player realistically available this summer – to move to Bayern without putting up a fight for his services will frustrate many United fans given the rise it would bring.

Kane’s wife Kate has reportedly been looking for homes in Munich and Bayern believe the player is ready to join them.

A move abroad would effectively end Kane’s ambition of breaking Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record. He is currently 47 short of Shearer’s total of 260.

But Kane is also desperate for trophies and believes Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel has told him they can win the Champions League together.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has become increasingly frustrated by the talk about Kane and has urged the club to resolve his future, admitting he is “uncomfortable” about the situation.

Postecoglou’s mood didn’t get any better this week when a German journalist ambushed his press conference in Bangkok to show off a Bayern shirt with Kane’s number on the back.
