An earthquake struck South Africa on Monday, pushing the state above its annual average just halfway through the year

An earthquake was confirmed near the coast of South Carolina in Charleston County on Monday afternoon.

The USGS recorded a 2.5-magnitude earthquake nearly 4 miles below the surface at about 1:45 p.m. near Ladson and Summerville.

This is the 11th confirmed earthquake in South Carolina in 2023, according to the Department of Natural Resources. This exceeds the Palmetto State average of six to 10 earthquakes per year, which was previously reported by the SC Geological Survey. The latest incident occurred in Kershaw County on June 20, near the state capital.

While earthquakes of magnitude less than 2.5 often go unnoticed, anyone who felt tremors or shaking from Monday’s quake can report it to the USGS.

No damages or injuries were reported.

Nearly 90 earthquakes have been detected in South Carolina since 2022, according to DNR, with most of them in the Midlands.
