Watch Apple’s Siri navigate orders through on-device processing

During the WWDC privacy segment, Apple talked about moving Siri processing from the cloud to your device, using the “neural engine” built into Apple’s silicon. While performing the audio processing on your phone rather than one of Apple’s servers is clearly better for privacy, it can also help speed up performance and reliability, as Apple showed in its demo.

Learning power on the device.

Now let’s see how fast I try it.

Compared to my demo, Apple is definitely faster — in part because I don’t have to deactivate Airplane mode every time I turn it on. (My phone still requires an internet connection for the requests that come next, but the model on the device doesn’t.) Full disclosure: My demo took a couple of times, and the phone warned me the first few times turning on the plane would make Siri mode inaccessible, And I had to tap the switch that turns it off, because I can’t do it with my voice.

Apple that processes Siri requests on the device should help its users be more confident about the privacy of their data: In 2019, we learned that contractors were listening to some Siri requests, something that wouldn’t happen if those requests were handled by the phone alone. While Apple eventually tried to correct this situation by being more transparent and making Siri recordings subscribable, dealing with more Siri requests on the phone is a good way to make the service more trustworthy.
