It’s been a long journey to get to this point for Houska, 37, a former advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) who is an Ojibwe of Couchiching First Nation. It’s been battling Line 3 for seven years, including the past three who live in a tent – even in winter – along the pipeline route. She and others in the group she founded, called Giniw Collective, have been on the front lines of efforts to stop construction on the pipeline. Young protesters crawled into the pipeline, perched on trees and whipped themselves with machines in an attempt to disrupt the work. They often paid the price, whether they endured freezing temperatures in winter; Or the authorities will pursue them.
