Progressives and Democrats who criticize Senator Joe Manchin, of DW.Va, risk alienating him from their party entirely and tilting the majority toward Republicans, according to Fox News chief political analyst Brett Hume.

“I don’t know what these Democrats think they’re doing when they attack him in this way,” Hume told “Special Report” host Brett Baer on Monday. “There’s only one way they could lose this seat if they kept it. He could simply change the party to the Republican Party.”

Progress Scores Mansion After Intercepting Election Bill, Filter Exits

The West Virginia Democrat faced the wrath of his party members on Monday over an op-ed he wrote in which he vowed to oppose Democrats’ sweeping election bill and sided with fellow Republicans on maintaining legislative stalling in the Senate.

Manchin’s opposition to the For the People’s Act infuriated progressive Democrats who had hoped to pass a raft of progressive legislation, including an election bill, without the support of Republicans in the Senate. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Rep. Jamal Bowman, D-Rep., and Rep. Munder Jones, DNY. He publicly criticized Manchin on Twitter.

But, as Hume pointed out, Machin’s reasoning has “political meaning” if he intends to maintain a majority in the Senate.

“He came from a state that is one of the redder in the country — Joe Biden saw Donald Trump getting nearly 70% of the vote in West Virginia, so Manchin should consider staying in a red state,” Hume said. “So what he’s doing makes political sense to him and it should make political sense to the Democrats because if they lose that seat, they lose that majority.”

Hume noted that if the Democrats lost Manchin’s cut-off vote, he would still be in a majority in the Senate but with Republicans controlling the room.

Hume said: “He has nothing to lose, as it seems to me, but he is likely to put the Democrats off his back.”
