For the first time in more than 15 months, Madison Square Garden is preparing to host a rock ‘n’ roll concert without social distancing, masks or caps.
Foo Fighters will premiere June 20 – but only to fully vaccinated fans. It will be the first full-scale concert in a New York Arena since March 2020.
“We’ve been waiting for this day for over a year,” band leader Dave Grohl said in a statement Tuesday, asking fans to prepare for a long night of screaming together until 26 years of Foos. “
Dolan, CEO and CEO of Madison Square Garden Entertainment, said in a statement that members of the public will be required to show proof of complete vaccination for Covid-19 with their tickets to enter the venue. Tickets will go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. with prices ranging from $50 to $119.
Concerts in full swing are the latest sign of a return to Manhattan’s cultural life. On Monday, Bruce Springsteen announced that “Springsteen on Broadway,” the rock legend’s biopic, will return for a limited time, beginning at St. James’ Theater on June 26.
Although most Broadway theaters and producers are still postponing opening until after Labor Day, a drop in coronavirus cases and an increase in the vaccination rate in the United States have encouraged many producers and performers to speed up their plans.
Fans were able to attend NBA games at The Garden, where the New York Knicks play, with separate sections for fully vaccinated and unvaccinated fans. (The Knicks were ousted last week, paving the way for concerts.)
The June show is part of the Foo Fighters tour that was supposed to celebrate the group’s 25th anniversary, but has been postponed for a year due to the pandemic. The band last performed at The Garden in July 2018, when tickets sold out for two nights on their Concrete and Gold tour. During 2020, the band released their tenth album, “Medicine at Midnight,” and Grohl engaged in a hilarious drum fight with 10-year-old prodigy Nandi Bushell, which delighted fans on social media.
The Foo Fighters will also be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October – an honor they received in their first year of eligibility.
Other concerts booked for Madison Square Garden include the Eagles in August, as well as Mexican group Banda MS and country duo Dan + Shay in September. Harry Styles will premiere for Five Nights in October, and Billy Joel will resume his monthly run in November. Concerts will return to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in September with Marc Anthony.
