Jim Vasell’s death came as a shock to one of his former stars.

Michael Strahan, who played under Vasyl during his seven years as the Giants coach, paid tribute on Tuesday on “Good Morning America.” Fassel died on Monday at the age of 71 after suffering a heart attack.

“A big part of my life. Just a great guy, great coach, and we will miss him,” Strahan said at GMA. “But I was definitely shocked this morning to learn this news, and I just want to send my love and condolences to his family. A great man. I enjoyed every minute with him as a coach and after my career when we used to keep in touch and talk.”

Strahan, the 49-year-old Hall of Famer, was part of the Fassel-led Giants team that reached Super Bowl XXXV, where they lost to the Ravens. This was the season that saw FFL secure its famous playoffs the day before Thanksgiving with the team sitting 7-4 after two straight losses.

“This is a game of poker, and I’m pushing my chips into the middle of the table,” Vasil said. “I raise the ante, and anyone who wants to get in, gets in. Anyone who wants out can get out. This team is going to the playoffs, okay? This team is going to the playoffs.”

The following season, Strahan broke the NFL’s record for most sacks in a season with 22.5. Strahan has had five double-digit sack seasons under Vassil, including the top 18.5 sacks in the NFL in 2003.
