iOS 15 Tales: Text cursor magnifier, new order picker, custom text size for each app, and more

Apple this week released the first beta version of iOS 15 to developers, and far from the hype surrounding its many features, several notable tweaks and improvements are still being revealed. Here, we’ve pulled out a few that we think are worth highlighting.

Keep in mind that Apple didn’t mention all of these changes in iOS 15 marketing, and there’s no guarantee it’ll make the final cut when ‌iOS 15‌ goes public in the fall.

Return the original wheel picker

In iOS 14, Apple removed the original large wheel-style dial picker used to select times, and replaced it with a smaller dial picker that’s somewhat hidden behind a boxed number input field. This new design was supposed to unite the two selection modes, but it also made it somewhat slower to navigate through the numbers.

Fortunately, ‌iOS 15‌ sees the return of the larger contact picker, but with a sleeker, more modern design. You can also tap the wheel to enter numbers using the number pad, essentially keeping the added functionality of the less-demanded version seen in ‌iOS 14‌.

In iOS 14, you can add a button to the Control Center that allows you to change the size of text on the screen on the fly. Any change you make is reflected system-wide regardless of your preference, but in iOS 15 that’s no longer the case.

Bring up the text size selector in the Control Center, and you’ll see new options for the text size adjustment app on the system, or just the app that’s currently open. iOS 15 will also remember your choice, so you can exit the app to do something else and then come back to it with the text size you chose for that particular app intact.

After its removal in iOS 13, Apple has reintroduced a new version of the text selection magnifying glass. The new magnifier is a bit smaller than the original, but it will likely be welcomed by the fact that it has appeared again.

From a user’s point of view, removing the lens seemed like an odd decision on Apple’s part, as it makes it hard to see where the cursor is under your finger. Fortunately, this tweak will likely survive, because Apple lists it as a feature on its iOS 15 page. Drag apps from Spotlight to the home screen

In ‌iOS 14‌, the functionality of the app icons that appear in Siri Suggestions and Spotlight search results is limited to opening the app. However, in ‌iOS 15‌, it’s possible to drag an app from Spotlight and place it directly on the Home screen, meaning you no longer need to constantly drag app icons between Home Screen pages to rearrange them.

You can also now delete apps directly from Spotlight via a quick and long press action that wasn’t available in previous versions of iOS, which means you can make short work of any apps that were left forgotten in your app library. .
