WASHINGTON — Representative Val Demings of Florida formally submitted her request to the Senate on Wednesday, announcing that she plans to challenge Republican Senator Marco Rubio for his seat next year.

Demings announced in a three-minute video that she shared her story while serving in the Orlando Police Department, where she made her way to serve as the first female police chief.

“When you grow up in a poor South, black and female, you have to trust progress and opportunity. My father was a janitor and my mother was a maid. Don’t tire of doing good, don’t tire,” Demings said in the clip.

She continued, “I’ve never tired of defending what I think is right. Now I’m running for Senate because of two simple words: Never tire.”

In a statement on Wednesday, Rubio blasted Demings, saying she had “no record of Florida results” and “voted with Nancy Pelosi almost 100%” in Congress.

“She has supported efforts to cut police funding, opposed the tax break for working families, and led efforts to hold Washington accountable for the Florida elections,” Rubio said. “Florida deserves a senator with a track record of fighting and winning for Florida families.”

NBC News reported in May that the Demongs planned to run for the Senate in 2022 after previously hinting that she wanted to enter the race.

Demings has served in the House of Representatives since 2017, and her husband is the mayor of Orange County, Florida. Between 2007 and 2011, Demings served as chief of the Orlando Police Department.

She gained national attention last year when she served as an accountability director in the first Senate trial of former President Donald Trump for his efforts to pressure Ukraine to publicize investigations into Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
