The New York Times has been criticized for its defense of Mara Gay, a misidentification issue at Vice President Harris’ press conference, and a flight delay for the White House Press Service due to cicadas making headlines today.

The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board argued that the leaker of IRS data containing tax return information on many of America’s wealthiest individuals wanted to “serve the left’s agenda” in tax legislation.

In an editorial Tuesday, the council wrote that the leak to ProPublica sought to influence the tax debate in Congress, and to coincide with the left wing of the Democratic Party’s pressure to raise taxes on the wealthy, including the introduction of a wealth tax.

The board wrote: “The ProPublica story is a long argument that somehow the rich don’t pay enough. The timing here is no accident, comrade.” “Someone in the IRS – or someone hacked the IRS – leaked documents to influence debate in Congress.”

Senator Ron Wyden, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, opened Tuesday’s committee hearing by noting the data dump, the same day the ProPublica article was published. “On time,” the board wrote, noting Wyden’s stated commitment to making a proposal to make sure the rich “pay their fair share.”

The board also noted that there was no evidence that the published data was illegal, and that ProPublica was trying to make a scandal by calculating the “real tax rate” by comparing gains in wealth against the amount of income tax paid.

“But wealth and income are different, and what Americans pay is tax on income, not wealth,” the council wrote, before making clear that preferential tax rates on capital gains and profits have long been supported by a bipartisan majority.

This has changed with the rise of the political left in the Democratic Party, and Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders running for president, demanding a new wealth tax. “The political point is that Mrs. Warren and Mr. Sanders lost. Mr. Biden didn’t fight wealth taxes.”

“This still leaves the real scandal behind, which is that someone leaked classified IRS information on individuals to further a political agenda,” the council wrote. “This is also the same IRS that Democrats now want to pump an additional $80 billion into chasing a staggering amount of uncollected taxes. As part of this effort, Mr. Biden wants the IRS to collect “the total inflows and outflows from all business and personal accounts.” From financial institutions. Why? Then the information could be leaked to ProPublica?”
