Warning: This story contains spoilers for Marvel’s Loki, Season 1, Episode 1.

Michael Waldron, creator of Loki, revealed that a touching and emotional moment near the end of the first episode of the series was inspired by a heavy scene in the first Toy Story movie.

In Loki Episode 1, the Asgardian God of Mischief discovers a time-contrast file containing video footage of his future death at the hands of Thanos, as seen by the audience at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War. It’s a wonderful moment that shows arrogant Loki from the Avengers era that he is invincible. But rather than being inspired by any Marvel comic moment, Waldron says she was actually moved by Buzz Lightyear’s discovery that he’s not a ranger in space.

“For Loki to see how his life and death are going, we talked about how Buzz Lightyear is finally learning in Toy Story and getting to know the fact that it is, in fact, a game, when he sees that commercial, what a humbling experience,” Waldron explained in an IGN interview.

“And this is the thing that can finally get rid of the noise [Loki], realizing “Wow, I wasn’t actually in control the way I thought.” That’s why we wanted Loki to see it, and I thought we also knew it was going to be really emotional and touching, and Tom [Hiddleston] You will do a great job with her.”
