A White House official told CNN that Biden and Middleton will focus on children and education during their first meeting on Friday. The two women will participate in a round table on early childhood education and tour a school in Hayley, Cornwall.
Middleton, along with her husband, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, has played a bigger role in facing the public in recent years in the UK, advocating for issues including mental health, the general well-being of children, the importance of sport and the visual arts, as well as the importance of getting a Covid-19 vaccine. Middleton posted a photo of her on her social media accounts receiving her first dose on May 29.
Biden has also made several recent trips to various parts of the United States to encourage people to get vaccinated. A White House official told CNN that a meeting in England between Biden and Middleton had been in the works for the past two weeks.
The first lady accompanies President Joe Biden at the first G7 summit, which will be held in Cornwall, England, from Friday to Sunday. Biden arrived in England on Wednesday. On Thursday, the President and First Lady met British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife, Carrie Johnson. Jill Biden and Carrie Johnson held a separate tea and tour of Mount St Michael off the coast of Cornwall.
In a statement to CNN, the East Wing noted that in addition to playing a supportive role for the president, Jill Biden’s first trip abroad as first lady includes several individual events, such as the one with Middleton.
“The first lady has her own independent schedule during G7,” Jill Biden’s press secretary Michael Larosa said. “At RAF Mildenhall, on Wednesday I spoke about the importance of supporting military families. She also hosted a roundtable with US Army wives who focused on the well-being and emotional health of service members and their families.”
The events and discussions operate in coordination with one of Biden’s initiatives, Join Forces, which supports military families. With Middleton, Biden is expected to once again highlight the military, as well as the alliance between America and the United Kingdom, a White House official says.
The president and first lady will also meet Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle on Sunday, and it will be the Queen’s first major meeting with a world leader since the death of her husband Prince Philip in April, and comes after a year in which most of her personal engagements have been postponed or canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, and Jill will return Biden to the United States after meeting the Queen While Jill Biden has for several years been friends with Prince Harry, whom she met in 2012 while the second lady, she has not met other senior members of the royal family.
