Tesla held a delivery event for the new Model S Plaid at its factory in Fremont, California, Thursday night after previously saying it would be available in February. 25 cars were delivered to their owners.
The sedan is the top version of the redesigned Model S and is priced at $129,990, which is $10,000 more than what was originally announced. However, Tesla said existing orders placed at $119,990 will be fulfilled.
The Model S Plaid features a three-motor powertrain with two electric motors in the rear and one in the front that combine to produce 1,020 horsepower, according to Tesla, making it the most powerful sedan on sale today.
Tesla claims it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under two seconds and cover the quarter mile in 9.23 seconds, which would be production car records, and reach a top speed of 200 mph.
Its range is rated at 390 miles between charges and it can replenish the battery with 187 miles of electricity in 15 minutes at a Tesla Supercharger station.
Tesla planned to add a Plaid+ version with more power and a range of 520 miles, but Musk announced last week that it had been canceled because “the Plaid is too good.”
A $79,990 slower, longer-range Model S will be available with twin engines that can reach 412 miles per charge at a later date.
The Model S Plaid debuts an all-new interior with touchscreens for front and rear passengers and an infotainment system powered by a Sony Playstation 5-level processor, according to Musk. Wired game controllers can be connected via Bluetooth.

It also has a rectangular yoke-shaped steering wheel without any stems on the shaft. The lights and turn signals are operated by thumb controls on the speakers and the transmission selector is on the central touchscreen however, the car seems to “know” which direction it wants to go without any interference at all.
The Model S Plaid is equipped with the latest version of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving electronic driver assistance system, which relies on eight cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors to provide partially automated driving functions.
