While Americans were rejoicing at returning to near normal, the number of new daily cases and deaths due to the disease transmitted by the Corona virus rose for the third day in a row, as cases exceeded 20,000 for the first time in more than a week.
The seven-day average of cases also increased, but remained significantly lower than the previous two weeks.
There were at least 22,314 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, according to a New York Time Tracker report, up from 15,059 on Tuesday, after 13,758 new cases on Monday and 6,067 on Sunday. Read previous Coronavirus update columns.
The number of deaths rose to at least 449 on Wednesday from 373 on Tuesday, followed by 305 on Monday and 253 on Sunday.
The seven-day average of cases rose to 14,809 on Wednesday from 14,030 on Tuesday, as the pace of decline eased from two weeks to 36% from 42% the day before. As for deaths, the seven-day average fell to 417 from 438 on Tuesday, remaining steady at a 20% drop from two weeks.
The number of states seeing a weekly trend of new cases this week rose to 15 on Thursday from 14 on Wednesday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. In the past week, only one state was seeing a rise in the number of cases.
On the vaccination front, the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that 304.75 million doses have been administered, and 164.83 million adults, or 63.9% of that group, have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
To reach President Biden’s goal of 70% of the US adult population to receive at least one shot by July 4, CDC data indicates that 15.73 million adults should get at least one shot over the next 23 days, an average of About 684,121 adults per day.
To help reach Biden’s goal, Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. WBA + 3.52% said Thursday that it will extend pharmacy opening hours over the next three Fridays to receive vaccinations against COVID-19.
Meanwhile, 140.98 million Americans have been fully vaccinated, which is 42.5% of the total population.
Within the age groups, 50.3% of Americans at least 12 years old are fully vaccinated, as are 53.3% of the US adult population and 75.7% of Americans at least 65 years old.

In the United States, full vaccination means two weeks have passed since the second of the two vaccines developed by Pfizer Inc. PFE, +19% and Partner BioNTech SE MRNA, -0.20% or Moderna Inc. mRNA, -0.20% have been given, or 2 weeks have passed since receiving their single dose of JNJ+0.90% vaccine.
So far, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has only been given emergency use for people younger than 12 years old. Moderna said Thursday it has applied for an emergency use authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine in teens.
Separately, there are millions of doses of the J&J vaccine due to expire this month, following the temporary suspension of doses in April to assess the risk of a rare blood clot, the Wall Street Journal recently reported.
The United States leads the world by far in the number of fully vaccinated people, tripling the 45.63 million in India who are fully vaccinated, according to JHU data. The United Kingdom comes third with a population of 28.54 million. Meanwhile, the United States ranks eighth in the proportion of its population fully vaccinated, behind Seychelles which ranks first with 67.5% and second place Marino with 63.7%.
Latest numbers
The total number of global cases of the coronavirus-borne disease rose to 174.53 million on Thursday, while the number of deaths rose to 3,764,439, according to JHU data. The numbers have more than doubled so far, with just under 83 million cases at the end of 2020 and about 1.8 million deaths.
Data showed that 2.24 million doses of vaccine had been administered worldwide as of Thursday.
The United States leads the world in total cases with 33.42 million and deaths with 598,456.
India continues to get closer to the United States, with cases rising to 29.18 million, but it ranks third in the world in terms of deaths with 359,676.
Brazil ranks second in terms of deaths, at 479,515, and third in cases, with 17.12 million.
The United Kingdom ranks fourth in the number of deaths globally, and leads Europe with a rate of 28,131 cases, while France ranks fourth in the world in the number of cases and leads Europe with about 5.79 million.
In China, where the virus was first detected in late 2019, it has had 103,261 cases and 4,846 deaths, according to official figures, which are widely believed to be underreported.
