Two people on a fully vaccinated Royal Caribbean cruise ship have tested positive for COVID-19, officials said in a statement.
The two guests were sharing a room aboard the Celebrity Millennium, part of Celebrity Cruises owned by the Royal Caribbean Group.
Reports said this was the first ship paid by customers to sail from North America since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
The statement said the two passengers were asymptomatic but were in isolation while the cruise line was doing contact tracing.
Reports said all passengers and crew members will have to prove that they have been fully vaccinated.
“All Celebrity Millennium guests were required to show evidence of vaccination as well as a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours prior to sailing from St Maarten last Saturday,” the statement said.
“This situation demonstrates that our strict health and safety protocols are working to protect our staff, our guests, and the communities we visit.”
The ship’s capacity was 30% when it took off on a seven-day voyage on Sunday from St Maarten, with stops in Aruba, Barbados and Curaçao, reports said.
USA TODAY reported that the ship was in Curacao on Thursday and is scheduled to return to St. Maarten on Saturday.
When the ship sailed, Good Morning America reported that the Millennium had two doctors, 11 nurses and an isolation cabin.

The cruise line said the celebs are planning their first post-pandemic ship from the US, in Florida, for the end of the month. The Celebrity Edge is set to take off from Fort Lauderdale with a fully vaccinated crew and a requirement that passengers over 16 show proof of vaccinations.
But confusion remains over how local laws and federal directives affect policy.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis banned vaccine passports and defied Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for cruise ships. The CDC requires ships to have 98 percent of their crew and 95 percent of passengers fully immunized.
