Facebook has acquired another popular virtual reality game developer, and on Friday announced that BigBox VR, makers of the battle royale VR game People: One, will join Oculus Studios.
“POP: ONE broke into the virtual reality scene just nine months ago and consistently ranks as one of the best-performing titles on the Oculus platform, bringing together up to 24 people at once to connect, play, and compete in a virtual world,” wrote Mike Verdo, Vice President of Content at Facebook Reality Labs. , in a blog post.” “And while social media brings players to POP: ONE, the quirky humor, constant updates, and pure fun of the environment keep them coming back again and again — we’ve even seen players schedule time to meet in-game for a synchronized social experience. “
Population: One of them had a great success
Residents: One of them was a hit, earning more than $10 million on the Oculus store “after just a few months,” Verdo said in a blog post in February. According to Verdu, the game, which is available both on the Oculus Store and on Steam, “will continue to be supported on all of its existing platforms” and the game will continue to receive regular updates, BigBox VR says on its website.
But it is not yet clear what bigger changes may be in the business due to the acquisition. “BigBox VR has big plans for the future of POP: ONE and for other projects, but we’re not ready to share details at this time,” Verdu says, vaguely.
BigBox VR joins a slew of other VR studios that Facebook has picked up over the past two years. The company acquired developer Onward Downpour Interactive in April, creator Lone Echo Ready in Dawn last June, Asgard’s maker Wrath Sanzaru Games in February 2020, and developer Beat Saber Beat Games in November 2019.
