Carol Choisyuk has been charged with willfully entering or staying in a prohibited building or land without legal authority, violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday.
Choisyuk appeared in court Friday morning before Magistrates Judge Gabriel Fuentes in Chicago and was ordered released on a personal pledge, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph D. Fitzpatrick is from the northern region of Illinois.
The FBI tracked Chwiesiuk through geolocation and communications logs linked to his Google email account and phone, according to the criminal complaint.
Chwiesiuk allegedly sent photos of himself in the riots wearing a beige Chicago police shirt and allegedly sent messages before the riots saying he was going to the capital to “save the nation,” according to the criminal complaint.
The police officer went to the Capitol the night before the riot and took 44 photos, which he sent to three people, according to the court document.
Chwiesiuk was accused of entering Senator Jeff Merkley’s office on January 6 and walking through the Capitol Crypt, taking a picture of himself inside the Capitol, before exiting a broken window, according to the criminal complaint.
CNN has reached out to his attorney for comment.
Chicago Police Chief David Brown said Choisiuk was “released of police powers” on June 2 after Brown learned of Choiseuk’s alleged involvement in the riots.
Brown said Chwiesiuk has been a member of the Chicago Police Department for two and a half years.
“What happened in DC on January 6th was an absolute disgrace,” Brown said. “The fact that a Chicago police officer was charged in that attack on American democracy makes my blood boil.” And yes, if these allegations are true, it breaks my heart.”
Chwiesiuk is scheduled to return to court for a hearing on June 18 at 2pm Cairo time.
