A commercial lobster diver was injured Friday when he said he was suddenly swallowed by a humpback whale off Provincetown.
Diver, Michael Packard, told the Cape Cod Times he believed he broke a bone after the confrontation, but only bruised. He detailed the incident in a Facebook post on Friday afternoon.
“Hi everyone, I just want to explain what happened to me today. I was diving a lobster and a humpback whale tried to eat me. I was in its mouth closed for about 30-40 seconds before it rose to the surface and spit on me. I’m very bruised but my bones are not broken.”
Packard told The Times that after he got trapped in the whale’s mouth, he thought he was going to die.
“I felt like I was moving,” he said, “and I felt the whale squeeze with the muscles in his mouth.”
“I said to myself, ‘There is no way out of here. I’m done, I’m dead. “All I could think of were my kids, they’re 12 and 15,” Packard said.
Packard thanked rescue officials in Provincetown for his assistance in the aftermath of the accident.
