Apple kicked off its WWDC 2021 keynote on Monday with iOS 15 news fans and developers who wanted to see the most. Craig Federighi reviewed key iOS 15 features during the press conference, as Apple released the first beta version of iOS 15 to developers once the event ended. As always with WWDC announcements, Apple didn’t have time to talk about all the new features built for this year’s operating system updates, and the same is true for iOS 15. Federighi & Co. didn’t address. Other than some of the major changes coming to iOS 15 on stage, he listed other notable features in the summary that appeared at the end of the iOS 15 trailer.
Now that iOS 15 is out in the wild, early adopters are finding all kinds of novelties that Apple hasn’t announced. One gem is the multi-touch trick all iPhone users need to know once they move to iOS 15, a new drag-and-drop functionality that works across apps.
Drag and drop is a simple and intuitive software feature that is enabled in many products and operating systems. It’s the simplest thing you can do on your PC when it comes to transferring files, images, and text clips from here to there. It’s faster than copying and pasting, and it’s a gesture we take for granted.
Drag and drop on mobile devices is a little trickier because it involves using multiple fingers to drag and drop items between apps. There’s no mouse or touchpad to help you, and the iPhone’s screen is limited in size, which makes the gesture cumbersome.
Drag and drop photos and text between iPhone apps is now possible in iOS 15, with iOS veteran Federico Viticci demonstrating the feature in the following video:
Viticci transfers an image from the Photos app to Mail and then does the same with selecting text from Safari. Everything looks fast and smooth in the video, but it takes some time to launch in real life.
After selecting the chosen item, be it an image or text, you will have to drag it on the screen with one finger without letting go. With a different finger, you will have to go to the home screen or go into multitasking mode and load the destination app. Once you open the new app, you will be able to drop the image or text inside it.

A visual guide appears in the upper right corner of the item being checked out, a green ‘+’ indicating that it is possible to drop the item in this new location. If you drop the item anywhere else on the screen without seeing the “+” sign, it will disappear and you will have to restart the action. Make sure you think about everything a few times before doing this, so you know exactly what to tap and drag on the screen with one finger while a different finger stays pressed on the screen. In most cases, this gesture will involve the use of the hands.
The feature appears to be based on the drag and drop feature already available in iOS. This is the gesture we use to group apps together in the same folder. iOS 15 develops this functionality to allow experienced users to speed through the copy-and-paste procedure. If the drag-and-drop trick is tricky, you can stick with the tried and tested copy and paste feature or use the share menu to move content between apps.
