Lin-Manuel Miranda showed a 21-year-old hand-drawn poster promoting In The Heights alongside his old friend and former college classmate.

Lin-Manuel Miranda premiered a 21-year-old poster In the Heights created by his old college classmate, Alex Horowitz, prior to its 2008 Broadway debut. Heritage, goals and aspirations.

Miranda’s love of musical theater came at the behest of his parents Louis and Luz who owned hundreds of Broadway related albums, and filled the young man’s ears with this style of music from a young age. Tunes from Man of La Mancha, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Sound of Music, and The Unsinkable Molly Brown filled the family home. This early inspiration led to a love of performing in high school and college. It took Miranda his last two years at Wesleyan to finish his script and music in In The Heights. One week after graduating, he was showing the final product to fellow Wesleyan Alum and composer Thomas Kail. Six years later, the show won Broadway’s highest honor, a Tony Award.

This gift is as important as the long bond between men. Miranda said he wrote In The Heights because he didn’t see a way for himself as a Latino to become part of the musical theater community. He said he didn’t see stories about Latinx being told, so he wrote what he felt was missing in the industry. This drawing depicts the essential elements of music, the world created by Miranda, which at its core spoke directly about friendship, family, and the importance of connecting to one’s heritage. As a standalone piece, the artwork captures the essence of what In The Heights can be about the people and stories of the region that have been brought to light in both Broadway theater and film music. Horowitz’s hand-drawn poster depicts a New York City subway car, with several associated apartment complexes built within, including a multi-level campfire.

For Miranda fans, it was a joy to witness his emotional reaction to the thoughtful gift. Miranda and Horowitz retained the friendship that developed during their college days before fame and fortune altered the course of their lives.
