The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will hold a meeting of counselors to discuss reports of heart inflammation in recipients of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines.
The agency said, Thursday, that the meeting will take place on June 18 and that the case is very rare and still has to be linked directly to the vaccine, according to Fox News.
A related report from the agency says the CDC has received 275 reports of inflammation in the heart, known as myocarditis and pericarditis. Officials said the case was most prevalent among young adults aged 16 to 24, most of whom have fully recovered.
This number represents a small portion of the approximately 130 million people who have received either vaccine. The CDC’s Dr. Tom Shimabukuro says initial reports and findings are consistent with those released earlier this year on rare carditis.
Also, according to CBS News, Shimabukuro said, “It’s kind of a comparison between apples and oranges because, again, they’re preliminary reports. It won’t turn out that all of these are reports of myocarditis or pericarditis.”
