Austin, the popular entertainment district on 6th Street in Texas, was the scene of a mass shooting early Saturday morning. Police said 13 people were injured and said the suspected shooter was not in custody.

Austin’s interim police chief, Joseph Chacon, said two of the injured were in critical condition.

The shooting took place around 1:30 AM. Along 6th Street, which houses many bars, restaurants and nightclubs in a city that considers itself the capital of live music. The street was fortified to prevent cars from passing through.

There were no specifics about what happened or information about the cause of the shooting.

“Our officers responded very quickly,” Chacon said. “They were able to immediately begin life-saving procedures for many of these patients, including the use of a tourniquet; applications of chest seals.”

Chacon said some of the gunshot victims were taken to hospital on police cruisers.

Chacon said the description of the shooter “wasn’t very detailed,” but said he believed the person was a man. Chacon said investigators are reviewing surveillance videos and other evidence from the area.
