Unseeded Czech Barbora Krejsikova won her first Grand Slam title on Saturday by defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets in the French Open women’s final.
Krejsikova, 25, described the atmosphere at Roland Garros in Paris as “amazing” after she beat the odds in only her fifth singles tournament, defeating 31st seed Pavlyuchenkova, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

“I can’t believe it,” she said out loud several times after she finished.
Krejcikova quickly dominated the match after easily winning the first set but her focus broke in the second, trailing 1-5 before a doctor spotted Pavlyuchenkova and eventually took the set.
In the final set, the two went back and forth, before Krizhikova could serve up the match with a score of 5-3. Pavlyuchenkova would fight three points of the match before losing the final set with a long backhand.

“I just want to thank everyone for coming today and cheering for us,” Krijikova said after the match. “The atmosphere was great. I was so happy that I was able to enjoy it. I’m really happy.” “It’s hard to put words together. I can’t believe I won a major tournament.”
She also spoke about her former coach Jana Novotna, the 1998 Wimbledon champion who died of cancer in 2017.
“Her last words were pretty much just having fun and just trying to win one of the Grand Slams. I know somewhere she looks at me. She was an inspiration to me. I really miss her and hope she’s happy now.”
